Moss is more than a cosmetic problem. It holds water against the tiles, freezes and lifts them in winter, and sheds constantly into the gutters until they block and overflow. Around the Waterside and the New Forest edge, tree cover and damp sea air make it worse. We scrape roofs clean by hand, clear the gutters and give the whole roof a check-over while we are up there.
Moss scraped from the tiles by hand rather than blasted off. Pressure washing can strip the surface off tiles and force water under the covering, so we do not do it.
All the moss, silt and debris cleared out of the gutters and downpipes, so the rainwater system actually works again.
Valleys and ridge lines cleared of the build-up that traps water and slows the roof draining.
Every clean includes a check of the tiles, ridge, flashings and pointing. If we spot a problem we photograph it and tell you straight, and if there is nothing wrong we tell you that too.
Because it does more harm than good. Pressure washing strips the weathered surface off tiles, shortens their life and can force water up under the covering. Hand scraping is slower, but it cleans the roof without damaging it.
Over time, yes. It holds moisture against the tiles, and when that freezes it can crack and lift them. It also blocks gutters and valleys, which is how a mossy roof turns into a damp wall.
It depends on the house. Shaded roofs near trees, common around the Waterside and the Forest edge, green up faster than open ones. Once cleaned, most roofs are good for several years.
We will advise on what suits your roof when we see it. What we will not do is sell you a miracle coating; a clean roof, clear gutters and sound tiles are what actually keep a house dry.
